Iraq: Commentary on Blockade, 'Suffering' of Kurds

[Station commentary: "The Blockade and the Suffering of the
Displaced People This Winter". (Clandestine) Voice of Iraqi
Kurdistan in Arabic 1730 GMT 9 Feb 92]

[Text] Dear listener: Under the economic blockade imposed on
Kurdistan during this cold and snowy winter, the suffering of
citizens has increased. This suffering and the subsequent
problems have left their mark on all aspects of life in
Kurdistan. Basic commodities, particularly food, are sold at
very high prices; that is, if they are found on the black
market. Not all families, especially the poorer people, can buy
these commodities. The fuel crisis is even worse. The problem
of most people in Kurdistan is to find a gas cylinder or a few
liters of fuel. If this is the situation of the people of
Kurdistan, then what is the situation like for those who have
been displaced from their houses and region and for those who
left their money, wealth, land, store, and work? What must the
suffering of the sons of Garmiyanah and Karkuk, for example, be
like?

The suffering of our people is a humanitarian problem,
because they are being deprived of the basic necessities of
life. Earnest, sincere, and continuous work is therefore needed
to save our people from starvation and the multifaceted
blockade. This is the responsibility of the Iraqi Kurdistan
Front and its institutions, given that the front today is the
leader of our Kurdish people's struggle and liberation movement.

Brother struggler Mas'ud Barzani has affirmed that there is
a need to draw a line between two issues. The first is the
political issue; that is, the national Kurdish cause, which has
yet to be solved. Today we are struggling to reach an honorable
solution to this cause through peaceful means and dialogue.
This is represented by the talks between the government and the
Kurdistan Front. The obstacle of defining the border of the
region has delayed the achievement of expected results,
although the Kurdistan Front has exerted earnest efforts to
overcome this obstacle. The second issue pertains to the
citizens' ability to lead normal daily lives--with the return
of service department to carry out their normal tasks--in an
atmosphere of security and stability and with the lifting of the
economic blockade against Kurdistan.

It is everyone's duty to look at things impartially from a
humanitarian and national angle, and out of concern for
overcoming obstacles and pushing things toward a solution, and
not in the opposite direction.
